Today is #WORLDOCEANSDAY, and we want to talk about clothing #microfibrepollution www.instagram.com/gabidezin
In 2017, the Ellen Macarthur Foundation’s report, “A New Textiles Economy” cited the International Union for Conservation of Nature revealing that washing our clothing releases around half a million tonnes of microfibre plastic into the ocean on an annual basis. This figure is 16 times higher than the damage done by microfibres in cosmetic products.

In the UK, our Environmental Audit Committee uncovered the damage done by microbeads in beauty products and successfully banned the sale of these in 2018. Now, we need our legislators to take action on the clothing problem, and for brands to seriously address the consequences of plastic clothing.

This year’s World Oceans Day campaign is hooked on the message that #TogetherWeCan, so let’s use our voices to demand change. You can watch a video by the Story of Stuff to learn more about the issue, and sign their petition to stop microfibre pollution now.

And, hold policymakers accountable! DM, tweet, or email your politicians ask them what they’re doing to address microfibre pollution.

We continue to focus our efforts on campaigning for a more transparent supply chain and supporting the garment workers and unions in striving for better pay and working conditions. We are also highlighting that this is a climate emergency, and we urge citizens to remember that Loved Clothes Last and to limit our consumption, buy better, buy less. We also urge brands to look at their waste and production levels and create new systems making use of existing textiles and their own dead stock. We have a whole range of resources and ways in which to enjoy clothes without adding to the impact on the world's resources. Check out our Emergency Measures to find out ways to make creative use of our existing clothes and textiles.
